This Is Why You’re #TeamNoSleep

It’s time to put down the phone and shut my eyes, but I can’t… Gone are the days when we liked nothing better than to be tucked up in bed with a mug of cocoa and a good book. Today, books and coffee are gone and something else has taken charge……… Social Media.

In today’s modern society, approximately 72% of adults spend their time in bed before falling asleep updating or checking their friends status updates on Facebook, WhatsApp and IG. And for kids, I’m sure its more than 80% of them.

I’m not saying that we shouldn’t keep up with technology, all I’m trying to put across is, there’s basically a time for everything.

From my own anecdotal experiences with sleeplessness, I discovered that those moments when I can’t sleep and I’m lying awake looking at my ceiling, chances are if I have a smartphone, I’ll eventually dig it out and look at Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, WhatsApp and a bit of Google Plus even if it’s only for a minute or two.

Also, I’ve caught myself getting stuck in a ‘checking’ loop that keeps me from getting into bed in the first place. What keeps us up all night is a trend called the ‘checking habit’. You want to check what your friend is posting, you want to check who has liked your new photo on Facebook and Instagram, you want to check whether your crush has already slept or did they lie to you with that ‘good night’ text at 8 but they were still online?

I mean, all you want to do is ‘check’ which you do subconsciously.

The point I’m driving home is that, like all things there is a time and place, and social networking should not take place between the sheets. By texting, tweeting, surfing and writing on our walls in bed we are nodding off with a busy mind which impacts upon our quality of sleep during the night. Bedtime should be associated with calming down and chilling out with a good book (of course reading it), listening to easy music, catching up with your partner (if you have one), reflecting on the successions of your next day in order to wake up feeling rejuvenated.

Please, try catch some sleep, or it will do the opposite.
